POSITION DESCRIPTION   TITLE:                                Preoperative Clinical Director - Nurse Practitioner   DEPARTMENT:                         Anesthesia Department  REPORTS TO:                          Chief of Anesthesia     POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Perioperative Clinic Director works to achieve the highest performance of the perioperative areas and endoscopy, establishing the culture for evidence-based, collaborative clinical care, and outcomes driven patient experiences. The perioperative areas include Pre-Admission Testing (PAT), Operating Rooms, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The Clinic Director works with the surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers and administration to develop team effectiveness and engagement, and set expectations for our patients’ clinical experiences and effective care transitions. The Perioperative Clinic Director works with clinical leaders in the surgical specialties to develop and nurture high quality and safe care for our patients, using operational excellence as a framework, and peer review as appropriate. $175,000 base pay + $10k bonus opportunity for hitting goals and metrics. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS - Active medical license in the state of California - Board Certification - Experience in Anesthesiology or Surgery with preferred leadership experience and training RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS: - Hold scheduled meetings at least monthly, and ad-hoc documented meetings as necessary with providers and surgical services leadership to discuss systems/patient flow, quality outcomes, scheduling and other operational matters, encouraging team process and engagement from all. - Assist in the professional development and growth of surgeons in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, relevant Quality and Safety leaders, and site medical directors. - Regularly assess medical staff perceptions and needs of the program to assure harmonious working relationships and evidence based clinical and safety practices. - Regularly review and annually sign off (as approved and updated) the latest Joint Commission standard policies, procedures, and evidence based clinical protocols for patient care. - Participate actively in the recruitment, selection, and on-boarding of new providers, including orientation to multi-disciplinary team process. Provide regular performance feedback and coaching as requested by the Chief Medical Officer to ensure our providers positive professional development, strong team behavior, and resiliency. - Ensure there is a system for benchmarking clinical and operating performance, as well as for planning and implementing required changes to exceed benchmarks. Include at a minimum: on time starts, room turnover, and block utilization. Examine need and implement systems to accommodate ambulatory cases, designing work flows that replicate the best practices of ambulatory surgery centers. Design surge systems for unexpected volumes that optimize patient flow.   - Accept responsibility for receiving, clarifying, investigating, and resolving in conjunction with surgical services and other SMHC leadership all concerns or questions of policy raised by surgeons or other perioperative personnel in a timely way. - Review, investigate, manage and resolve complaints / concerns about providers arising from patients, medical staff, or administration. Provide coaching, counseling, retraining, and direction in collaboration with Chief Medical Officer to ensure positive performance development. Trend complaints and lead the team toward continuous improvement of care for patients. - Manage own administrative and clinical time to the expected standard, balancing the need to be present for patients, providers, and administrative colleagues for best patient outcomes and program effectiveness. Report hours as required for compliance with Medicare regulations and hospital policy. - Regularly attend and participate in other, related medical staff committees, as requested by SMHC leadership, within scope of responsibilities and administrative hours. Engage other providers to participate in meetings as appropriate as part of their professional development and organizational citizenship. Provide physician leadership to the Perioperative Executive Committee, collaborating with nursing, anesthesia, and administration. - Assist in an efficient and expeditious operation of the practice providing input on budgets, billing, equipment, staffing, and yearly goals and objectives. Interact closely with administration to develop goals and provide ongoing assessment to achieve objectives, consistent with SMHC strategic plan(s). Helps prepare and meet with CRNAs for OPPEs. - Reviews, develops and maintains Departmental Policy and Procedure manual. - Administers anesthesia under the designated coverage model. Selects, obtains and/or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic; to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery. Requests appropriate consultation for abnormal patients’ responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or other form of therapy. - Ensures department staff are trained in service lines and follows protocols and hospital/department tools to improve individual and team performance employing best practices and ensuring quality and safety. Operations Duties - Liaison for CRNAs with anesthesiologists and Somnia administration as well as OR and hospital leadership. - Performs CE evaluations for potential new hires, assessments, recommends, screens and interviews new CRNA hires within 72 hours of request. Manages day to day operations as assigned which may include managing the board. - Works with interdepartmental committees to communicate departmental issues, as well Facility requests to department and represents/supports colleagues as indicated. - Schedules and conducts staff meetings with CRNAs to inform staff of changes in practice/employment policy and procedures. Resolves problem areas that are affecting operating efficiency. - Responsible for keeping morale at high level by ensuring policy and procedures are fairly applied. - Administers anesthesia under the designated coverage model. Selects, obtains and/or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic; to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery. - Requests appropriate consultation for abnormal patients’ responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or other form of therapy. - Participates in operation and planning projects as requested. Budget/Financial Duties - Evaluates opportunities for improvements within the department and offers suggestions to implement positive change. - Participates on monthly Hospital Account Reviews and ensures Department stays within established personnel expense budget. - Ensures Department maintains adequate coverage models and ensures Department is complying with established proforma. If there is a need to deviate, this must be communicated to Medical Director and VP of Clinical Operations for review and collaboration. Quality Duties - Coordinates, researches, implements and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies relating to all human resources activities concerning CRNAs. - Continues to improve interdepartmental relations by supplying educational lectures pertaining to anesthesia, as requested. - Continuous monitoring of effective and efficient patient care initiatives by CRNAs, including but not limited to, chart audits, visual audits, syringe labeling, documentation. - Conducts monthly rounding with each CRNA to assess the quality of patient care and to identify problems and shares report with appropriate individuals (VP Ops, MD Director, COO, etc.). - Ensures CRNA compliance with Outcome Form completion is greater than 95% and all adverse events are reported into the Quality Program. - Establishes proactive training programs for providers based on outcomes reporting.  Compliance Duties - Responsible for narcotic control, regulatory drug compliance, safety, radiation safety, infection control, Joint Commission, MACRA/MIPS reporting and OSHA compliance. - Stays up to date with anesthesia regulatory requirements, state/national meetings and generates in-service for Department of the latest trends and best practice recommendations suitable for Department and other Somnia sites. - Ensures all forms used at site are compliant with Joint Commission, Medicare Conditions of Participation and billing. - Performs random documentation audits on provider charts to ensure compliant documentation.  Administrative Duties - Actively participates in benefit and compensation package procurement and creation, investigates CRNA benefit questions and collaborates with benefit plan administrators regarding problem resolution. - Develops and administers new employee orientation/competency programs for new CRNAs. Ensures new CRNA hires are enlisted in CRNA email distribution lists and Somnia CRNA initiatives. - Develops and implements marketing strategies for CRNA recruitment and hiring in collaboration with Somnia Marketing & Recruitment Departments. - Participates in operation and planning projects as requested. - Works with interdepartmental committees to communicate departmental issues, as well as to communicate Facility requests to department. - Schedules and conducts staff meetings with CRNAs to inform staff of changes in practice/employment policy and procedures. The chief is responsible for keeping morale at high level by encouraging teammates, providing positive feedback, creating a fair and equitable work environment and ensuring policy and procedures are fairly applied.  Qualifications  - Graduation from a recognized University with a Master of Science Degree in Anesthesia or Nursing - Skilled clinical CRNA with flexible teamwork mentality - High emotional intelligence supporting servant leadership culture  - Five or more years of clinical anesthesia experience preferred  - Possess leadership skills necessary to deal effectively with patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.  - Ability to motivate CRNAs within the environment.  - Possess ability to think clearly and make analytical decisions in initiating departmental or employee policy - Must have solid decision-making ability and ability to delegate/follow up  - Possess a working knowledge of computer applications and Anesthesia Information Management Systems. Authority Boundaries All major policy and procedures as well as CRNA operating decisions are carried out by the Chief CRNA but are made mutually with the Site VP of Clinical Operations, Medical Director or Somnia Administrative support staff assigned to site.
